On one side, Hitler did indeed use the SA (Sturmabteilung (Assault Division)) to his own means. The leader of the SA was Ernst Rohm, an old WW1 Major. The SA was founded in 1920. They had a number of tasks ranging from the protection of Hitler and his meetings to breaking up other party meetings to assaults on Jewish and Communists homes and business.

    1. Well done - similar feedback to the above. Try to assess the significance of targeting communists. Think about all the groups of voters who had reason to fear communists (farmers, middle classes, right wing supporters, Christians, upper classes).

  3. Agree: Hitler used threats and violence in his speeches which made Hindenburg not want to appoint him as chancellor. Instead he got Von Papen but he couldn't find a solution to the depression and after this he brought in Von Schleicher but he wasn't very popular. This is were Hindenburg knew he needed someone new. At this time the Nazi party was rising rapidly and Hindenburg realized that the public liked and supported Hitler's speeches. Von Papen also said to Hitler he would tell Hindenburg to make Hitler chancellor if he made Von Papen vice chancellor.

    1. Thanks Harrison - because most of what you write is about the deal to make Hitler chancellor - I think this would fit better under disagree.

The SA may have helped Hitler become Chancellor in a number of ways. One of these ways was when they helped him during the Munich Putsch, where they formed the military backbone, surrounding the hall and then helping Hitler march on before having 16 of their members killed. From then on Hitler used the SA to organise parades, protect him, make rallies and generally do much of the hard work for Hitler.

    1. Good facts - However, you need to try and assess the significance of events and make judgement in order to reach the higher levels. The Munich Putsch was 10 years before he became chancellor. Are you assessing how significant this was?

  8. On the other hand, Hitler did also use other means to get voted in. These include his speeches, his promises, and his choices. The last one is since Hitler made the choice that after leaving Prison he would only democratically get in as Chancellor. In the Reichstag he had 37% of the voters. These are generally the Unemployed, The rich and the middle class, but not the working class.

    1. Good but always make explanations - assess why these people voted for Hitler. Try to link their support back to the question. Did they support him on the basis of violence and intimidation or for other reasons?

  13. Well done Owen - To improve you should try to assess the significance of beating up communists. Try to develop this to explain why he became more popular.

  21. Disagree:

I disagree with this statement because Hitler had other ways of obtaining what he wanted such as his speaking and the deal that he made with Papen where if Hitler became what he wanted then Papen would be he vice. Hitler's speaking also played a big role in the fact that he became chancellor because when Hitler spoke all the other people would listen and that is how he got his messages across.

  23. Personally I don’t agree that threats and violence where the main reason that Hitler was appointed chancellor in 1933. I believe that it is partially the reason because otherwise Hitler wouldn’t have wrote Mein Kampf and wanted to take chancellorship diplomatically and he wouldn’t have gotten votes from his speeches in the courtroom and in jail. Furthermore, when he resorted to violence he actually lost votes not gained them, so it got him no-where.
On the other hand, he did sort of use his army to scare other parties and when he got his chancellorship his army paraded down the street outside of the presidency building with torches and the Nazi flag

  24. Was the violence and threats Hitler Did and said the main reason why he became chancellor?

I partly agree and disagree with statement as Hitler may of intimated the working class by using the SA to beat them up, however the middle class and rich; including Paul von Hindenburg, did not. Actually they found this as a rather savage and desperate act to become in power. Hindenburg may not have been afraid of Hitler, but he was certainly afraid of the ideal world that Hitler lusts. Also as Hindenburg had a strong hatred towards Hitler he would not appoint someone chancellor who he had a disliking too.
If one was to hypostasise what would happen if Hitler had a less savage personality, he may of one over Hindenburg. However he may not have intimated the lower class enough for them to vote for the Nazi party. This infers that using violence may have been the best option to become government.

Good source of information http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/history/tch_wjec/germany19291947/1hitlerchancellor1.shtml - NDSAP are the Nazi Party

  26. Disagree:

During the 1930's the chancellor kept recalling the elections and every time they recalled the Nazi party gained more and more votes from the German citizens. The recall of elections accrued more frequently after the wall street crash. This did not have any violence involved and only used speaking to overcome problems.

  28. Agree
Finally the Chancellorship deal with Von Papen. This deal meant that when Von Papen would persuade Hindenburg to make Hitler Chancellor, Von Papen would become the Vice-Chancellor, thinking that he would be able to contain Hitler and therefore be able to “corner him” so that he would stop being a distraction. However this backfired when Hindenburg granted Hitler emergency powers after the Reichstag fire. This was the move that got rid of any opposition for Hitler and made him the most powerful man in Germany.

  29. Good idea Harrison - to improve could you have a look at how popular the communist were become before 1933 in order to substantiate your point about how Hindenburg felt threatened by them? Research election results and look for evidence that the KPD was growing.

  30. It is very obvious that the SA intimidated many people at the voting booths to vote for Hitler and Nazi party, however was this a significant reason for why Hitler was made chancellor.

  31. Disagree:
From what I have researched (and my own opinion), I believe it's the more significant reason for Hitler becoming chancellor that he got into power democratically, not by force.

  32. Disagree:
I don’t agree that threats and violence where the main reason that Hitler was appointed chancellor in 1933. He was a great speaker which made him popular instantly. When he had a lot of supporters he started to make promises. He said he would create new jobs for the unemployed. This increased his popularity because a lot of people were unemployed. Also Hitler said he would get ride of the treaty of Versailles. Most Germens hated this so the Nazi party got more votes.
